Official translators accepted by public bodies in Spain

Sworn translators are the only official translators, whose translations are accepted by the public administration in Spain. These certified translators are appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MAEC) and can officially validate the translation of foreign documents that need to be presented to the Spanish public administration or Spanish documents that need to be presented in other countries. The official or sworn translator, also sometimes known as a sworn interpreter, will sign and stamp the official translation before sending it to the client by post, registered mail or courier. The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs sometimes holds new exams to appoint new translators and then updated their list of appointed sworn translators.

According to the analysis of the data from the official MAEC search tool carried out on April 2, 2026, there were 6,431 active sworn translators and interpreters in Spain, corresponding to 6,668 active entries across 39 languages.

How can I check whether a sworn translator is officially authorised?

In Spain, the translator or interpreter must be officially authorised and appear in the official information available through the MAEC. We also provide practical guidance on the official list of sworn translators.
